Malcolm is a jaded pub landlord, tired of life and bereft of any hope. He has finally decided that he must end his own life, and drags himself through one last evening tending the bar. The morning after, he carries a rifle out to the countryside, and bags a pheasant from the grey skies. Elliot is a happygolucky character. He tentatively puts his hope in God, and understands little about the corporeal world. His mind is simple, and his heart naive. After finishing his weekly paperround, he cycles out to the countryside surrounding the town, to a field with ponies in it. He begins to feed them, when the land owner confronts him and maliciously attacks him. As Elliot suffers the land lord's kicks and blows, only Malcolm hears his cries as he bites the cold barrel of his shotgun in a field nearby.
