The Hurrying Kind (1962)
24min · Short, Drama · 1 January 1962
Rick Taylor is just finishing his junior year in high school. His best friends Tom and Cliff, with who he works on Tom's roadster as the chief mechanic for fun, are graduating, which is making Rick restless, he who contemplates not going into his senior year. He figures he isn't that great a student, he has no plans of going into college regardless, and doesn't understand what one more year of high schooling will accomplish for him. This thought is spurred by the fact that Pete, his boss at the service station where he works as a pump jockey part time, is looking for a full time employee. Pete does not dismiss Rick's want for the full time job entirely, but let's Rick know that his inexperience is working against him. Rick ultimately talks to Tom and Cliff about his thoughts, as well as some other authority figures in his life, namely his parents, and his guidance counselor, Mr. Welling. Through all these discussions, Rick will have to decide if his short term goal of getting any job to make money, or his long term future, as mentioned by all those he speaks to is improved by earning that high school diploma, is more important. An idea from Cliff may provide Rick with that answer.
